Interregional Meeting United Peatlands
November 10, 2023We immersed ourselves once again in the heart of the peatlands, this time collaborating in the meeting “Weaving Networks in Patagonia”, which transcended regional borders with a clear purpose: to conserve the peatlands.
An activity framed within the “Patagonian Peatlands Initiative” project, promoted by the M.A.P.A. Foundation and supported by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), took place on Tuesday, November 7th at the Aysén Regional Museum.
On this occasion, the Kreen Foundation participated as a collaborator alongside various stakeholders from the Aysén Region, such as AyCiencia, the Center for Ecosystem Research in Patagonia (CIEP), INIA Tamel Aike, and the Aysén Private Development Corporation (Codesa). Also present were the Chiloé Peatlands Network, representing the Los Lagos Region, and the Hach Saye Foundation, from the Magallanes Region.
Alejandra Marabio, director of projects and communities at Fundación M.A.P.A., highlighted the roots of this connection, whose objective was to intertwine and exchange knowledge about “these small ecosystems vital for life, which is now more evident due to the triple climate crisis we are going through,” she explained.
Carlos Mendoza, Executive Director of the Kreen Foundation and a speaker at this event, commented that “we have been able to map and identify the peatlands within the Meullín-Puye Nature Sanctuary, a designated conservation and preservation area, and our plan is to ensure that these areas remain untouched.”
These events allow us to highlight and remember the importance of peatlands as climate regulators and biodiversity reservoirs.
