World Water Day
October 1, 2025Every March 22, World Water Day is celebrated. Last year, members of the United Nations General Assembly, aware of the urgency of halting the progressive retreat of glaciers, decided to dedicate this commemoration to “glacier conservation.”
Likewise, March 21 was proclaimed as World Glacier Day, to be celebrated for the first time this year, and 2025 was declared the International Year of Glacier Conservation.
💧These are vital freshwater reserves that play a key role in water and climate cycles through melting processes, contributing to the regulation of precipitation and to the formation of water flows that make water availability possible across different latitudes of the planet.
Concern for their conservation is growing steadily, leading to the creation of initiatives aimed at regulating activities both on glaciers and in their surrounding areas.
According to the Glaciology Laboratory, Aysén is one of the regions with the highest number of glaciers in the country. In Chile, there have been various attempts to legislate on this matter. In this regard, it is worth highlighting the regulation published in January 2024, which governs the information that the General Water Directorate must provide and make public regarding the glacier and snow monitoring network and inventory.
🔎 The positive aspect is that there is awareness of the urgent need for greater protection; however, there is still a long way to go in Chile and around the world.
