Flora

Given its diverse flora and fauna, the Meullín-Puye Nature Sanctuary has enormous value as a reserve of endemic biodiversity in the Aysén Region.

Located in a humid temperate coastal ecoregion, the sanctuary is characterized by the absence of a dry season.

Meullín-Puye stands out for having areas covered in vegetation, dense old-growth native forest, evergreen deciduous forest, and Andean temperate deciduous scrub, home to 13% of the national population of Nothofagus Antarctica, commonly known as ñirre.

Forests cover 65% of the area and the dominant species in the tree layer are the Magellan’s beech (Nothofagus betuloides), lenga beech (Nothofagus pumilio), Chiloé’s coigue (Nothofagus nitida), tepa (Laureliopsis philippiana), Guaitecas cypress (Pilgerodendron uviferum), and ñirre. Other species in this layer include the winter’s bark (Drimys winteri), tineo (Weinmannia trichosperma), mañío de hojas punzantes (Podocarpus nubigenus), native flora, funga, and endemic species, some of which are listed as endangered or threatened.
