One Health: Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI)

Avian influenza is an extremely serious problem. Between 2022 and 2024, the country had already experienced unprecedented mortality events in wildlife associated with avian influenza. These included outbreaks in marine mammals such as the southern elephant seal, which shifted from Least Concern to Vulnerable due to population declines caused by avian influenza.
This public health emergency has not only affected wild species but has also involved the culling of domestic birds. In addition, cases of infection have been recorded in domestic animals and humans, highlighting the need to adopt a comprehensive “One Health” approach that considers the interconnection between animal, human, and environmental health.
