Las Ranas Urban Wetland: Habitat of the seven colored tanager
January 24, 2025This is excellent news for the Las Ranas wetland.
Members of the Puerto Aysén Community Environmental Committee spotted a seven-colored tanager in the Las Ranas urban wetland, located in Puerto Aysén, Chilean Patagonia.
Although this bird had been described in our region, this is the first record of this species on the eBird conservation platform for this wetland.
Even more encouraging is that this seven-colored tanager (Tachuris rubrigastra) was sighted with two chicks, which would indicate that breeding is occurring in the area and that the Las Ranas wetland is not just a stopover point, but rather one of its habitats.
The eBird record is important because it collects and records information about birds globally. It is one of the world’s largest scientific projects related to biodiversity, created by Cornell University, and allows data to be shared with an international scientific community, contributing to answering urgent conservation questions. Its Chilean version is managed by the Network of Bird and Wildlife Observers (ROC).
According to the IUCN, the seven-colored tanager is listed as “Least Concern.” However, in our country, it faces potential danger due to habitat alteration or destruction.
This is why the community and the Puerto Aysén Municipal Environmental Committee are working to raise awareness about the importance of protecting this water reserve and recognizing it as an urban wetland under Law No. 21,202 on Urban Wetlands to guarantee its conservation.
