Temperate humid forest

These ecosystems cover 65% of the protected area.

Their conservation over large areas allows maintaining the functionality and contributions that forests provide to humans and non-humans, such as their ability to capture carbon, emit oxygen and their ability to regulate water cycles.

Four vegetation zones can be observed in the Sanctuary:

– Temperate evergreen inland forest of Magellan’s betuloides (Nothofagus betuloides) and taique (Desfontainia fulgens), in low forested areas.

– Temperate Andean deciduous scrubland of ñire (Nothofagus antarctica) in higher and colder areas.

– Andean temperate deciduous forest of lenga (Nothofagus pumilio) and sarsaparilla (Ribes cucullatum).

– Temperate Andean grassland of Nassauvia dentata and Senecio portalesianus.
