Native amphibian community

Amphibians are key components in the ecosystems of the Sanctuary.

They are pest controllers, provide food for other animals, and are indicators of environmental quality, both in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

This is because they are the only tetrapod (four-limbed) vertebrates with a biphasic life cycle, meaning that their eggs and larvae develop in water, and then, in their juvenile and adult stages, they inhabit terrestrial ecosystems.
